Some terminology that might help you when you first play in SimmplyGammon Tournaments. Some common language used by the Hosts and Players to indicate situations or give instructions.

A
Abuse: Occasionally you will have the misfortune to have an abusive opponent. Please call a host to your table if this happens. Don't be drawn into an argument. At SHG there is an option to log table chat. This log may be saved and sent to simmplygammon@gmail.com. If the abuse occurs in a lobby, please let the host/s deal with it.
All Start: Except in Marathons with continuous ins, all tournaments have an official start time, and no first round games may commence before the official "All Start" from the host. Games that start early will not count, and will have to be replayed. After first round, games may start as soon as a player has an opponent.
Assignment: Instructions from the host where to go and who to play.

B
Boot: When a player leaves without notice from room or game table, usually the result of a lost connection to the internet.
Bruised: Player who has had a loss or losses but is not yet eliminated from a tournament. [see unbruised]
Bye: Byes occur when there are an uneven number of players. The last player in a round will skip a round if there is no opponent to play.

C
Closing: End of sign-up period for a tournament. This occurs at 10 minutes after the tournament sign in begins. Close must be at that time, there are site guidelines that make it mandatory.  [see sign-ups]

E
Elimination: Except in marathons, all tournaments are single, double or triple elimination. Single elimination = 1 loss and you are out. Double elimination = 2 losses and you are out. Triple elimination = 3 losses and you are out.

Format: Type of tournament e.g. 1pt single elimination, 1pt double elimination, Steps, Teams.

G
Gag: Players who breaks TOU may be silenced by a host or sysop for a set period of time. Sometimes repeating of the same post will cause a temporary gag by the server. Server gags only last until player posts new message.
Glitch: When a game locks up or otherwise stops responding to player commands. Glitches should be reported to the host in Main lobby.
Grand or Grand Final: Final Last match of any tournament. The winner of the Semi Finals plays the Winner of the Winner's Finals to decide who the tournament winner is. Points per game and number of games that must be won depend on the format of the tournament.

Host: Person responsible for tournament assignments and player control.

Ins: Another name for signups. [see signups]

L
Leaderboard: Site where player’s points are stored so they can see how they 'stack up' against other players in the group. Each hosting group has it's own leaderboard, and points are not transferable to other groups.
Lobby: Chat area. [see main lobby, table lobby]

M
Main Lobby: Game room area where you see all tables and chat posts appears. This is where tournament assignments are given to the players and match wins are posted.
Marathon: Any type of No Elimination tournament. Marathon tournaments are played for a set amount of time, player recording the most wins is winner.
Match: A game or "match" consisting of a set number of games/points depending on the format of the tournament. One game match is set to 1 point, 3 game match is set to 3 points, etc.
Minis: Tournaments where there are continuous ins for set numbers of players over a set time period.  Mini Tournaments are ran normally with assigned rounds but begin when a set number of players have signed in, usually 8 or 16 players.

O
Open: Tournament is still taking players in sign-ups. Normally this begins 30 minutes prior to the set all start time and continues to 10 minutes after all start is given.

P
Points: Each hosting group awards points to players for each win and usually keeps a running total for each month posted at an appropriate Web Site. Points can also refer to the number of games in for a match. [see match]
Post Boot: When a player boots from game the remaining player is required to inform the host with a lobby post as ….      *****Opponents name booted from table number*****
Post Win: Upon winning a match the winning player is required to Post to lobby the win as… "*** winners name // opponents name @ table number***" Please note that if you win your game but do not post win within a reasonable time, you will be timed as if booted, and may forfeit the game if you time out before posting.

R
Rounds: All tournaments have a varied number of rounds, depending on how many players participate in the tournament.
Rules: Specific rules for the tournament will always be run shortly prior to "All Start". While it is not compulsory to read the rules, players are assumed to have read them, and may be penalized for breaches of the rules.

S
Semi Final: Last game between surviving or one loss players before the Grand Final. In single elimination, there will normally be two Semi Finals which can be referred to as Quarter Finals (unless a lucky player gets a bye to Grand Final). Winners of the two Quarter Finals advance to Semi Final. Losers share equal third place. In double or triple elimination, last two players in one or two loss bracket play each other to decide who will play the winner of the Winner's Final.
Sign ups: How a player will enter or join a tournament. Typically this requires a player to ask an "IN" by posting in the lobby, ***** In Please *****.
Steps: No elimination format in which players aim to accumulate a set number of wins or steps. e.g. 8 Steps, 8 wins, 10 Steps, 10 wins. Tournament continues until the first player or team of players accumulates the required number of steps. The competition finishes with the post of the last win required.

T
Table Lobby: Game table area where chat appears.
TOC: Tournament of Champions. Most hosting groups run a monthly TOC. All winners of tournaments in that month are automatically eligible and will usually be notified by email of the date and time of TOC if the host of the tournament/s they have won has been given an email address.
Tool: Software used by hosts to run a tournament. Keeps track wins and losses, who you play each round, saves points and player information.  This can be anything from a bracket tool to a note pad.
Tournament: An organized competition that determines top finishes. Sometimes referred to as, "Tours", "Tourns" or "Tourney".
TOU/S: Terms of Use/Service. Standard set of rules That all players or members must agree to before an account or access to the gaming portion of a site.

U
Unbruised: Player who has had no losses in a tournament.

W
Winner's Final: Only occurs in double or triple elimination. The last two players who have made it to this round without a single loss play each other to decide who will automatically go to the finals. The loser of this match will continue playing until they have a second or third loss depending of the format.
