Playing Online Tournaments...

It's Easy..

It's easy and fun to learn how to play in tournaments! Join SimmplyGammon in TR6 (Tournament Room 6) at SafeHarborGames, tell us you're new or what kind of help you need to get started, and unless it's a rare very-busy few minutes, the host and other players will be glad to help you! After all, we were all "newbies" once up a time!

To help you get started, here's most of the beginner's info. you might need, plus links to the rest of it. You can read your way through, or refer back to it along the way as you pick up the fine points of playing in tournaments. In no time at all you'll be having fun and maybe even helping us welcome other newcomers.

The first step to playing with us in SimmplyGammon is to go to :http://www.safeharborgames.net/ and Register a user nic. You don't need to belong to any group to get a nic, and it's very quick and easy.

Once you have a player nic, go find a tournament on our schedule for SimmplyGammon HERE. Find a tournament that has a start time you can be there for. All Times for All Tours will be listed in U.S. Pacific Time. Signups will start ½ hour before "All Start", and end 10 minutes later when the tour "Closes" sign-ups. Go into the tournament lobby, type ************In please*************, and the host will assign you a seat and an opponent. The host will run the Tournament Rules and format in the lobby before each tour. SimmplyGammon hosts 100+ tours every month, and you can learn all about the various tournament formats for backgammon HERE at bottom of page.

It's a good idea to read the Tournament Rules at least once, and for SimmplyGammon you can find them HERE. It's also a good idea to read the 'Cruise Guidelines' listed under 'Site Policies' on the SHG web site. It's very entertaining, and will give you an idea of how friendly and fun the site and the tournaments are.

It's customary to say 'Hi & GL'(hello & good luck) to your opp at the beginning of a match, and most opps will also say 'ty & bye' (thank you & goodbye), but some players won't say a word. They may be minors with a parent's permission to play, but not chat, or they may very well not speak English!

Please use the **** for all important communications with the host, starting with the ****In Please**** and also for posting a win. If you win your game or match, post your win in the lobby like this: *****YourNic/YourOpp'sNic @ [table #]****
And if you lose, you don't post, only winners post.

It's Fun..

Both players then watch the lobby for the host to give out your next assignment. This continues until two players are left to play a Grand Final match. If your opponent "boots" (disappears) or doesn't start to play, you can type in the lobby:
*****opp booted@table #***** or:
*****no start @ ___[table #]**** and then watch the lobby for the host to tell you what will happen next. It will be very easy to watch the lobby for a bit and pick up on how things get done.

It's addicting..

The best part of any tournament is the host! Hosts are trained Volunteers who will run the tournaments, tell you where to sit, give you an opponent, help resolve any glitches or problems that may arise, and help keep the lobby friendly and fun. They'll be glad to help you learn how to post a win (only the winner will post), how to report an opp (opponent) who has booted (disappeared) or not started to play, how to repost if necessary, and even how to request a "brb" (be right back) if you need a quick break. Hosts will time any missing players and assign the Win to the remaining opp after 3 boots or 5 minutes, whichever comes first. Most SimmplyGammon tours are Double Elimination, which means that you're not out until you have lost to two different opponents.

SafeHarborGames is a great gaming site! One feature you're sure to enjoy is "pm"s (Private Messaging) , the ability to communicate with other players in the same tournament room, and other Friends who are signed in to the site, as well as the host if you need a word in private. It includes a fun variety of emoticons, plus features such as "Ignore" or "Block" in case you ever need them.

Hosts and other players are free to "kib" (kibitz, or watch) any games. SHG offers the capability of

kibbing more than one game at a time, and even kibbing while you're playing, if you're fast enough to do both.

We suggest you try out your favorite game in a Social room, which you can find by going to the main page at SHG & looking at the top of the room list under "The Beacon - Social". Or come on in to TR6 and if it's a quiet time between tours there will usually be at least one SG Payer happy to sit with you and show you how the game program works. In no time at all, you'll be ready to jump into a tournament. We love seeing new players and will be happy to help you through the tournament steps.

From the very casual to the most dedicated backgammon player, the "Tips - Hints" link at SimmplyGammon is very informative for whatever your level of interest is. Check out Backgammon 101 for a video tutorial for beginners or advanced players that need that refreshing of the "right" opening rolls.

Our main goal at SimmplyGammon is for our players to relax and have fun, and enjoy the games and the lobbies. Players bring all levels of skill to sometimes fierce, but always friendly, competition. We're looking forward to seeing you very soon in TR6 to play! There's tons of fun and lots of new friends, just waiting for you to get started!
